Manufacturing is Nebraska’s fastest-growing industry, delivering 11% or $13 billion of Nebraska GDP annually. The National Association of Manufacturers estimates exports have increased more than 40% between 2010 and 2018. More than 1,990 firms employed more than 100,000 people with annual average compensation of $62,500, according to a 2017 report by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Nebraska’s highly productive workforce, affordable real estate and utility costs, low cost of doing business and high-quality transportation networks make the state a natural fit for manufacturing growth. Barriers to growth include the need for full integration of automation as a force multiplier and the ability to attract skilled labor. |

- invest in automation. At 60% automation potential, the manufacturing sector can easily grow in productivity.
- Build broadband connectivity.
- Launch a venture capital investment fund and productivity incentives, focused on next-generation manufacturing companies.
- Attract more workers by scaling internship and apprenticeship programs, enhancing training and customized workforce solutions and boosting STEM talent among graduates.
- Create a multi-partner manufacturing innovation center of excellence, focused on Industry 4.0/automation.
- Develop an “inland port” to cluster transportation and industrial hubs for efficiency and innovative potential.
